We returned to Shell, with a megaphone

PRESS RELEASE from XR DACORUM

On 22nd April a group of local people gathered outside the Shell garage on Berkhamsted high street with a banner NO FUTURE IN FOSSIL FUELS, a megaphone and some facts about what they called Shell’s “climate criminality and greenwash”. The group, all members of Extinction Rebellion Dacorum, delivered these facts to camera before laying out the banner on the pavement.

Martin Strivens from Hemel said, “We are here for a short while today to protest legally against the duplicity and greed of an oil company profiting from destruction by accelerating climate and ecological breakdown.”

Kathryn Salway from Berkhamsted added, “Shell has a history of misleading the public and its investors that it is working towards a safe green transition away from fossil fuels while in reality devoting no more than 7.5% of its investment on renewables. Just last month the company has announced that this has been cut.”

Sue Hampton, also from Berkhamsted said, “The devastation of the Niger Delta is one appalling illustration of the company’s reckless disregard for human life in the communities affected by their exploitation – and then blamed. We are here to call Shell out, and ask the public to increase pressure on the company’s directors to stop threatening life on earth.

A few weeks earlier two of our members were outside BP in London as part of a Cut the Ties XR protest.
